2023 Season Experience Update: B.Y.O.B.  (bring your own bedding and bath supplies)

We setup cedar platforms with canvas tents on walk-in Moran State Park campsites.

You take it from there.

Glampers have long appreciated the unique San Juan Islands’ climate and Orcas Island rainshadow.  Nestled between Washington State’s West coast, the Olympic Peninsula, and Vancouver Island, these islands are a great escape for anyone feeling those rainy day blues.  In fact, Orcas Island and the San Juans often experience almost a foot less rain than Seattle each year!

Shelter from the storm

Why exactly do the San Juan Islands enjoy more sunshine than many of their Northwest neighbors?

Because of a neat thing called the Olympic Rain Shadow, or the Banana Belt.  The San Juan Islands’ location, on the Northeastern side of the Olympic Mountain Range, means that most of the islands are within the circle of the rain shadow.  This phenomenon also includes the northeastern part of the Olympic Peninsula, Whidbey Island, and the Southern part of Vancouver Island.

While Mt. Olympus may experience up to 220 inches of rain in a year, Olga on Orcas Island will get about 29 inches of  rain on average annually.  That means lots of clear, crisp January days!

Summer Weather

You may be asking yourself:  what does this mean for a summertime glamping adventure on Orcas Island? If the islands are dryer in winter, does that mean they’ll be hotter in summer?

You’ll be happy to know that, while the rest of the country may be sweltering, our fair emerald isle is known for comfortable summers.  Temperatures usually hang around in the 70’s during the day and 50’s at night. This makes for perfect adventuring weather as you hike, swim, and explore Orcas Island.
